Learn How to Repair Small Dents in Your Metal Garage Door

Blog

Children are often not as careful as they should be when it comes to leaning things against garage doors. If your metal garage door has a few dents and dings in it, there is no need to replace the entire door. You can improve the look of your door by quickly removing the dents and dings on your own. Here is how to repair a slightly beaten-up garage door.

Gather Your Supplies

All of the supplies you need for this simple do-it-yourself project can be found at a home improvement store. You need

  • a clean rag
  • 80-grit sandpaper
  • a putty knife
  • auto body filler used to repair dents and dings on car panels
  • primer
  • a paintbrush
  • paint that matches the color of your garage door

Clean the Damaged Areas

Wet the rag and use it to wipe any dirt or debris from the door. You want to be sure that the surface is clean so that the bonding agent can adhere well to the surface.

Sand Down Dents and Dings

Use the sandpaper to carefully sand down the areas that are damaged and the areas that are around the damaged areas. This will help the bonding agent adhere to the garage door because otherwise the surface would be too smooth for it to be able to grip. Wipe down the areas with the wet cloth one more time to remove any dust that may have collected on the surface of the door.

Apply the Body Filler

Next, use the putty knife to carefully spread the body filler onto the door where the dents are located. You need to be sure that the filler is applied as flush with the door as possible so that it will not be easily detected once the job is complete.

Sand the Areas Again

Allow the filler to sit for however long the package says it takes to harden and then sand the areas down until they are smooth and flush with the rest of the door.

Prime the Areas

Use the paint brush to apply the primer to the areas and roughly an inch outside of the damaged areas to ensure that the paint creates a seamless look when you are done. Allow the primer to dry for a few hours before painting.

Paint the Areas

Use the paintbrush to paint the dings to match the rest of the door. Be sure to apply the paint in thin layers so it dries quickly. Allow the paint to dry for roughly thirty minutes before applying another layer of paint.

Once you have painted the door, allow it to dry overnight before opening and closing it. When the paint is dry, you should not be able to tell the difference between the areas that were and those that were not damaged. For assistance, talk to a professional like Zook Garage Door Services.
